How to Prepare for a Senior Android Developer Interview

Senior Android interviews test more than technical depth. They assess judgement, ownership, influence and the ability to make teams and codebases better. Here's what to expect in the loop, and a structured plan to prepare for each part.

A mid-level developer delivers features well. A senior developer also decides how features should be built, foresees problems, raises the quality of others' work, and handles ambiguity. Interviews are designed to find evidence of those behaviours.

What interviewers look for

Senior Android interview signals Five signal areas: technical depth in Android and Kotlin, system and architecture design, quality and performance ownership, influence such as mentoring and code review, and handling ambiguity and trade-offs with product partners. Technical depth gets you in. Ownership, influence and judgement distinguish senior candidates.

The typical interview loop

RoundWhat it testsHow to prepare
Coding (DS&A or practical Android)Problem solving, clean KotlinPractise medium problems in Kotlin and small Android features. See Coding Problems
Android deep diveLifecycle, coroutines, Compose, performance, memoryTop 50 questions, Coroutines questions
Mobile system designStructured design, trade-offsSystem design guide; practise 4โ€“5 prompts aloud
Architecture / code reviewSpotting issues, proposing improvementsReview real PRs critically; know common anti-patterns
BehaviouralOwnership, collaboration, conflict, impactPrepare 8โ€“10 stories with outcomes

Preparing behavioural stories

Use a simple structure (situation, task, action, result) and focus on your decisions and measurable outcomes. Prepare stories for:

  • A technical decision you drove, and its trade-offs.
  • A production incident you handled, and what changed afterwards.
  • Improving performance or stability (with numbers if you have them).
  • Mentoring someone, or raising code-review standards.
  • Disagreeing with a product or engineering decision.
  • A failure, and what you learned from it.
Use real outcomes

"Reduced cold start from X to Y on mid-range devices by deferring SDK initialisation and adding a Baseline Profile" is far stronger than "improved performance". Use honest numbers you can explain.

A 4-week preparation plan

  1. Week 1: fundamentals refresh: lifecycle, process death, coroutines, Flow, Compose state and effects.
  2. Week 2: architecture and system design: practise three designs aloud (feed, chat, offline notes).
  3. Week 3: performance, testing and security deep dives; coding practice in Kotlin.
  4. Week 4: behavioural stories, mock interviews, review weak areas.

Questions to ask them

  • How are architecture decisions made and documented?
  • What's the state of testing, CI and release process?
  • How do Android engineers collaborate with product, design and backend?
  • What does success look like for this role in six months?

Common pitfalls

Only "we"

Describe your specific contributions, not just the team's.

Dogmatic answers

"Always Clean Architecture" signals inexperience. Talk about context.

No trade-offs

Every senior decision has costs. Name them.

Frequently asked questions

How many years make someone "senior"?

Titles vary by company. Interviews look for behaviours (ownership, judgement, influence) more than years.

Will AI tools come up?

Increasingly: how you use AI coding tools responsibly, and how you'd add AI features safely. See AI and Android Work.

Conclusion

Prepare for senior Android interviews across depth, design, ownership, influence and judgement: refresh fundamentals, practise system design aloud, sharpen coding, and prepare honest stories with real outcomes.
